"For all those who have faced death and chosen life."
Welcome to the Street Poets Writers Block. This a community poetry forum where you can post your own original poems and comment constructively on the work of others. We encourage you to keep it real -- but keep any sexually explicit or specific gang references to yourselves. Respect is a requirement. Think of the Street Poets Writers Block as a sacred space within which we are invited to connect with each other and the spirits that inspire us to create. It is a place to listen and be heard. To dig deep and dream big. To create the kind of soulful conversation that leads to peace -- in our hearts and on the streets. Thank you, in advance, for adding your voice to the mix. Our world wouldn't be the same without it.

One Street, One Heartbeat, One Love.

I stood there
lost in my own maze
with my own case
fingers crossed
Hoping it wouldn't happen to me
losing hope every day that passed me
like nagging flies I slapped away cause I didn't want no more

He stood there
18 -- trying to be strong
on his collect call
Mama I lost the case
No Mama don't cry
Tears rolled from his eyes
25-to-life
But we're gonna be okay
Everything is gonna work out fine
Don't worry Mama
Please don't cry
As I stand there watching
him trying to remain strong
for his Mama
trying to be that man for whom he searched
for so long
tears hit the concrete like bombs

my heart like bombs

He stood there facing the wall
aching like a child who scraped his knee
putting up with the pain but a few tears still escaped

mama i have to go
people are waiting for the phone
I love you mama

Then I picked up the receiver and dialed.
