Street Poets’ POETRY & GARDENING program was designed to awaken our students to their own true nature by bringing them into active relationship with the earth and the natural world. Rooted in alternative public schools and community sites in Los Angeles’ most under-resourced neighborhoods, this program introduces youth to the healing synergy of poetry writing and gardening practices – both of which have proven to be transformational in the lives of Street Poets’ workshop facilitators.

Under the direction of Street Poet alum David Sanchez (Owner of Seed & Sol Organic Gardening) and teaching artist Arturo Quiros, Street Poets launched our pilot program at Central High School in the Mar Vista Gardens Housing Projects in September 2018. This 12-week experiential learning workshop series teaches students to plant and tend their own garden, while exploring their roots and dreams through the practice of poetry.
